Fire behaviour of building materials
The fire behaviour of building materials is an important criterion within the building regulations, in addition to fire resistance. The European standards according to DIN EN 13501-1 and the national classification according to DIN 4102-1 classify the fire behaviour of building materials into four classes:
- Non flammable
- Hardly inflammable
- Normal flammability
- Easily flammable
The European classification system additionally regulates smoke development and burning dripping.
In timber construction, common construction materials such as solid wood, glued laminated timber and cross-laminated timber are usually classified in class D-s2,d0 according to European classification. This means that the timber construction material is “normally flammable”, has smoke development class 2 and, in addition, does not drip when burning. With regard to the fire behaviour of building materials, it is important to pay attention to the classification to ensure that the materials meet the specified requirements.
