Poppies apartment building
in Amsterdam

The Poppies apartment building in Amsterdam is an innovative residential complex made of 3D wooden modules in solid wood construction, combining minimalism and community in a modern way. Built on a former industrial site, the building comprises a total of 109 prefabricated room modules, from which 93 almost identical one-room apartments have been created. The modular design not only allows for efficient use of space, but also promotes social interaction through shared areas.

Living in a tiny house style
Life in the community

The Poppies apartment building was designed as a multifunctional space that combines living, working, shopping and community life. The aim of the project is to create a space that balances sustainability, social interaction and affordable living.

The residential units consist of 3D wooden room modules in the tiny house style and thus meet the requirements for ecological and cost-effective construction. They range in size from 41 m² to 50 m² and offer an open-plan living, working and sleeping area with an integrated kitchenette and a private bathroom.
The private rooms are complemented by several communal areas that promote social interaction and give the building a shared flat-like character. This creates a living space that is not only ecologically sustainable, but also supports the formation of a strong sense of community and meets the growing demand for housing in an innovative way.

Prizes & Awards
for the Poppies apartment building

Derix Timber Construction Award 2025

The Poppies apartment building was awarded the DERIX Timber Construction Prize in 2025. Particular praise was given to its modular timber construction, the use of recycled or renewable materials, and its ability to store large quantities of CO₂.

The advantages of wood
in the Poppies apartment building

The Poppies apartment building in Amsterdam is an impressive example of how modular timber construction combines ecological and structural advantages. The modular units are made of X-LAM, which not only offers a warm, natural aesthetic but also has excellent insulating properties.
Thanks to the high degree of prefabrication of the efficiently produced modules, they could be assembled quickly and easily on site – without any additional stabilisation measures. This significantly reduced the construction time and made the project economically attractive.
Poppies scores highly in ecological terms thanks to the ability of wood to store CO₂: the wood used in the building binds around 1,800 tonnes of CO₂, meaning that Poppies actively contributes to climate protection.

Sustainable, durable
and energy neutral

From 2025 onwards, at least 20% of all new buildings are to be constructed using timber or other organic building materials. The regulation stipulates that a high proportion of detached houses, multi-storey buildings and high-rise buildings must be made of timber.
