Matchboxin Eindhoven

Matchbox in Eindhoven is a building constructed almost entirely from timber, combining residential, office and commercial spaces under one roof. It comprises 36 flats, the offices of the housing association Trudo, and premises for small businesses on the ground floor.
The timber structure – supplemented by a concrete core – ensures sustainable, carbon-sequestering architecture and enables rapid, efficient construction. The result is a modern, environmentally friendly building.

Rethinking the cityA space for community and the future

Matchbox is a forward-looking development project in the innovative StrijpS district of Eindhoven, combining sustainable architecture with social and urban functions. The compact building combines residential, commercial and small-scale retail functions and acts as an active urban building block in a formerly industrial setting. A key spatial feature is the greened patio, which serves as a communal hub and promotes social interaction and neighbourly relations. The clear structure and flexible use encourage a dynamic mix of functions and users. The consistent use of timber as a load-bearing material – complemented by a compact concrete core – reflects a resource-efficient, circular approach to construction. It is worth noting that the building has a positive carbon footprint and stores more CO2 than was released during its construction. The exposed wooden elements not only define the structure but also lend the building a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Matchbox serves as a prime example of how social responsibility, environmental sustainability and urban density can be brought together in contemporary architecture.

The benefits of wood

“Matchbox” owes its name to its appearance: both in its shape and its overall look, the building is reminiscent of a matchbox. At the same time, the name refers to wood as a building material, subtly alluding to the material used to make matches. In this way, “Matchbox” combines form, material and design concept into a striking overall image, emphasising the building’s distinctive character.
