Ice rink
made of wood
The ice rink in the Dutch city of Leeuwarden was completed in 2015, just in time for the skating season. DERIX supplied 64 arch trusses, each 22 metres long, for the supporting structure on behalf of Bouwcombinatie Elfstedenhal. The building includes a 400 meter long ice rink, a field in the middle and an additional, separate field. There are also changing rooms, a restaurant, a reception, technical rooms, offices and meeting rooms.

The ice rink in Leeuwarden is a steel construction combined with concrete floors and wooden frame elements. The 400‑meter ice rink is surrounded by 64 arched spruce trusses and is reminiscent of an old ice rink hall. The finger-jointing allowed the trusses to be manufactured in one piece, so that the assembly could be completed within six days.

The advantages of wood
in the Leeuwarden ice rink
Thanks to the wood used, the ice rink is particularly sustainable and energy-efficient. Furthermore, the construction method with wood in this project created the best ratio between cost and quality. Visually, the traditional Elfsteden feel was optimally underlined with the wooden arches.
