Surface quality
of glulam components
Glulam components can be manufactured with different surface qualities. Surface quality refers to the condition of the surface of the wood. It includes features such as colour, texture, grain, surface treatment and freedom from defects. Surface quality is an important factor when deciding on a particular wood grade.
Definition of surface qualities
in the glulam leaflet
As there is no standard for the surface qualities of glulam, the Studiengemeinschaft Holzleimbau e.V. has defined various qualities in the glulam leaflet. The desired quality must be contractually agreed in each case and specified in the performance specification. The surface quality is divided into the following categories:
Industrial quality: This surface quality is suitable for use in industrial applications where the optical quality is not important. Slight colour variations and minor errors are permitted.
Visible quality: This surface quality is intended for use in visible areas where the surface of the BS wood is visible. There must be no major defects, such as knotholes or cracks. However, colour deviations and slight unevenness are permitted.
Selection quality: This surface quality is the highest quality level and is used for particularly demanding applications. The surface is completely free of defects and has a uniform colour and texture.
