Overlength transport

Often the maximum possible dimensions of components result from the transport dimensions. Individual components up to approx. 16 m long, 2.50 m wide and a total height of up to 4 m (including low loader) can be transported without any problems.

Excess lengths and widths can be transported, but with greater effort. It is advisable to take possible transport dimensions into account during the design phase. If necessary, assembly joints should be provided. With very “slim” beams, the assembly and transport effort increases considerably, as additional auxiliary supports are required.

Regulations for overlength transport

Components that exceed the above-mentioned dimensions are subject to certain criteria for transport. A distinction is made here between large, heavy and long transports. If a transport exceeds the width of 3.01 m, for example, an escort vehicle is required. For the DERIX Group, a permanent permit for transports with lengths of 15.60 – 19.70 m and a maximum width of 3 m has been agreed with the forwarder.

Permit requirement and escort vehicles

Special transports are generally subject to authorisation and in some cases must also be secured by one or more escort vehicles of classes BF2 – BF4.

The information sheet on the equipment of private escort vehicles for the protection of large and heavy goods transports has applied to the equipment of private escort vehicles since 1992. This leaflet was supplemented in 2015 by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (publication in Verkehrsblatt, issue 12-2015, page 404 and following).

Changes in the categories of escort vehicles

The old vehicle category BF3 is not sufficient for this purpose. It has therefore been expanded to include the BF3 Plus and BF4 categories. The equipment features of BF3 vehicles have also changed. Vehicles put into service after 1 June 2015 must be equipped according to the new leaflet. With the BF4 category, an escort vehicle type was introduced whose variable message sign system can operate in all four vehicle directions. As a result, this vehicle category is also able to secure a transport where an escort by the police was necessary at certain points. For this purpose, corresponding rule plans were also drafted to facilitate the transfer to private escorts of large and heavy goods transports by the road traffic authorities.

Country-specific regulations

The regulations on accompanying cases are state-specific and therefore not uniform nationwide. The instructions of the authorities range from the deployment of auxiliary police officers or administrative assistants to the preparation of traffic control plans or roadbooks.

Police escorts may be required in difficult traffic conditions and in transport cases where discretionary decisions have to be made.
