Port Terminal
in Norderney

The harbour terminal on Norderney impressively demonstrates what original and unusual supporting structures can be implemented using modern timber engineering. Thus, for the realisation of the ferry pier, a shell-like, organic form was designed that fits perfectly into the island’s surroundings. The roof construction of the terminal consists of glulam arch girders as well as individually prefabricated, partly conical glulam and X-LAM elements. The timber constructions with their high degree of prefabrication were also ideally suited for the very limited construction and assembly time.

Individual roof construction
made of wooden elements

The curved structure of the terminal, whose building envelope was constructed with reinforced concrete walls, was to find its counterpart in the roof construction. For this reason, the roof was planned radially and in the form of two shell circles running in opposite directions, which are connected to each other via an intermediate structure. For this purpose, we manufactured a self-supporting arched truss construction with axis-related, individual curvatures. The result was a 4,000 m2 free-span hall. Due to the multitude of individual ceiling elements made of X-LAM and glulam, there is no repetition factor – this construction is and remains unique.

Individual glulam

With our glulam, individual constructions can be built, because we produce the components in almost any shape and size – entirely according to your wishes. The kiln-dried wooden boards are joined together by finger-jointing to form long lamellas. Discover our diverse range of glulam.

Solid and versatile element construction

Whether roof, ceiling or wall – X-LAM can be used in a variety of ways. Our X-LAM element construction gives you great freedom in building design. The flexibly usable elements made of cross laminated timber are custom-made for you and can be assembled quickly and easily.
