Film: Airship hangar made of wood
The assembly of the wooden elements for a very special building project began yesterday in Mülheim an der Ruhr: After the old airship hangar has been demolished in spring 2022, airship Theo is now getting a new home. The gigantic hall that is being built here has a span of more than 40 metres and is over 25 metres high. The hall’s supporting structure is made entirely of wood: Trusses made of glulam and a shell made of cross laminated timber (X-LAM). Around 1,500 wooden components are manufactured and assembled at DERIX with millimetre precision. Particularly remarkable: The impressive supporting structure is assembled by wood-wood-wood connection – without a single piece of steel in the main load-bearing areas.
