Milestone for sustainability

DERIX Group has reached another milestone on its way to maximum sustainability and circular business:

The DERIX Group produces and operates in a climate-neutral manner.

By the end of 2022, DERIX had already commissioned a comprehensive CO2 balance sheet for the entire company. The result was extremely good for a manufacturing company: Due to numerous optimisation measures already implemented, the emitted values were extremely low. Now DERIX has taken the consistent next step. The company has used the results of the accounting to offset its emissions by investing in reforestation projects and is awarded the distinction of “climate-neutral company”.

For years, the timber engineering company has focused on the continuous optimisation of its processes for greater sustainability and resource conservation. In 2021, for example, it was the first company in the industry to commit to a general take-back of its components and will take them back at the end of the building’s service life, which is defined by the customer. In this way, the components can be reused for the production of new designs in the sense of a consistent circular economy. The company also focuses on sustainability when it comes to energy and covers its electricity needs with the company’s own PV systems, supplemented by green electricity. Heat is generated by thermal utilisation of the waste material. The employees of the DERIX Group are involved in the internal working group “DERIX for future”, in which they scrutinise processes and structures within the DERIX Group in order to make them more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Simone Derix, commercial manager of the DERIX Group and member of the management board, explains: “For us, the development of our company towards more circular economy and sustainability is an ongoing process. On the one hand, it is important to work continuously on the identified opportunities for improvement and, on the other hand, to uncover new potential for optimisation. I am very pleased that we have now reached a milestone with our climate neutrality status. This is an important milestone for us on our way to implementing circular economy. It makes me particularly proud to have achieved this as a manufacturing company.”

In order to manage and drive the company’s sustainability projects even more efficiently, DERIX Group has hired a sustainability manager: Antonia Görg is working on the further development and implementation of the DERIX Group’s sustainability strategy. For her, the topics “energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions”, “resource efficiency” and “safety & health” are at the top of the priority list.

“We are constantly working on reducing the already very low emissions even further. To this end, we are currently introducing an energy management system that continuously measures all consumption so that we can discover new savings opportunities,” explains Görg. “We understand the principle of sustainability as a comprehensive concept that also includes the well-being of our employees as a very important factor, on which we want to focus even more,” explains the sustainability manager.
