Wooden supports
Wooden supports can be clamped into the foundations or hinged to them. A rigid connection to the roof structure is also possible. Hinged supports connected to the foundations require only small, inexpensive foundations. Larger foundations are required for clamped supports. Clamped supports also serve to brace buildings. For pendulum supports, additional discs and bracing must be installed in the walls and roof.
Advantages of wooden supports
Wooden supports may be clamped directly into foundations according to the general building authority approval number Z-9.1-136 of the German Institute for Building Technology. They are fire-retardant and good-natured in case of fire. From a building physics point of view, they do not represent a thermal bridge in exterior walls of heated buildings. Columns made of steel or reinforced concrete can be combined with roof structures made of wood. In any case, the special properties of the materials must be taken into account.
