Use classes according to DIN 68800

When it comes to selecting the right wood for indoor or outdoor use, the service class plays an important role. The service classes are defined in DIN 68800 and serve as a guide for the selection of timber components.

What are use classes?

The service classes define the requirements for the wood depending on the area of use. Depending on the loads to which the wood is exposed, it is assigned to a certain service class. The classification is from GK 0 to GK 5.

GK 0 – wooden components without risk

Wooden components that are not endangered by moisture or insect infestation and are located in rooms with a normal indoor climate or comparable rooms are assigned to GK 0. Here, no chemical wood preservation measures are required as long as the structural measures according to DIN 68800-2 are fulfilled.

GK 1 – Wooden components with low risk

Wooden components with a low risk are, for example, shutters, fences or terrace floors. They are at risk from moisture or insect infestation, but not permanently. Wooden components of GK 1 can be protected by a surface treatment with wood preservatives.

GK 2 – Wooden components with moderate risk

Wooden components with a moderate risk are, for example, beams, posts or boards on façades. Here, there is a long-term risk due to moisture or insect infestation. Chemical wood preservation treatment is recommended for GK 2 wood components.

GK 3 – Wooden components with high risk

Wooden components with a high risk are, for example, roof trusses, bridges or fences in the ground. Here, there is a permanent risk due to moisture or insect infestation. Chemical wood preservation treatment is indispensable for GK 3 timber components.

GK 4 – Wooden components with very high risk

Wooden components with a very high risk are, for example, wood in water or wood in contact with the ground. Here, there is a particularly high risk of moisture or insect infestation. Chemical wood preservation treatment is indispensable for GK 4 wood components.

GK 5 – Wooden components with extremely high risk

Wooden components with an extremely high risk are, for example, wood in salt water or wood in permanent moisture. Here is an extremely high hazard.
