Elke parapluconstructie bestaat uit een interne trekring, gebogen liggers en een externe drukring. In het midden van de parapluconstructies bevinden zich dakramen. De constructie wordt gedragen door twaalf meter hoge kolommen van gewapend beton, die qua vorm doen denken aan boomstammen. Het olifantenverblijf in de dierentuin van Keulen is bekroond met de Duitse Houtbouwprijs Noordrijn-Westfalen 2006. De jury was onder de indruk van de architectonische en technische uitvoering en het gebruik van het duurzame gelamineerde hout bij de bouw. Vooral het dak van het gebouw scoorde punten vanwege het uiterlijk.<\/p>\n

Om desondanks een stabiel olifantenverblijf te ontwerpen, zijn de plattegrond van het gebouw en de onderdelen van gewapend beton hieraan aangepast. De dakconstructie met een oppervlakte van ongeveer 3.000 m\u00b2 moest daarentegen zo licht en goedkoop mogelijk worden ontworpen. Dit lukte door te kiezen voor gelamineerd hout als dragend onderdeel.
