Het samengestelde effect van beide bouwmaterialen wordt gerealiseerd met penvormige of gelijmde verbindingsmiddelen. In de samengestelde doorsnede heeft de houten doorsnede een dragende functie in de trekzone en het beton een dragende functie in de drukzone.
Dankzij het samengestelde effect kunnen grotere overspanningen bereikt worden dan ten opzichte van conventionele houten vloerconstructies. Tegelijkertijd is het eigen gewicht lager dan bij zuivere betonnen vloeren.
